CANON is a broad and inclusive network across multiple sectors comprised of large-scale data custodians with extensive practical experience managing and/or manipulating data.
CANON has two levels of membership:
Steering members
A smaller, sub-group of members that leads the CANON steering group, drives the strategic direction of the network and helps shape working drafts of plans or documents for consultation by the larger group. The Steering Group is supported by Special Advisor, Dr. Ann Cavoukian of the Global Privacy & Security by Design Centre. Steering group members are expected to provide financial and/or other in-kind consideration required to support CANON-related initiatives and the work of a secretariat function on a cost-recovery basis.
General members
Members who participate in the knowledge exchange activities of the larger network, are consulted on an as-needed basis, and provide general feedback in response to calls for input. General members may choose to have their level of participation characterized as having “endorsed” the group’s outcomes, or as having only been “consulted” during the group’s proceedings.
